Kitty Fisher took London by storm in the middle of the 18th Century. I get the impression that adultery was quite fashionable at that time among the aristocracy. Ladies were apparently as fashion conscious in this respect as men, and perhaps as a result high class prostitutes could attain a certain degree of respectability, or at least grudging acceptance. It seems that Ms. Fisher was quite a celebrity and did not keep a low profile. She was painted by a famous portrait artist, lived in luxury in one of the most exclusive parts of the city, and made no secret of who was keeping her at any given time. She lives on in a nursery rhyme that is well known in England. The verse and much else about her can be found at Kitty Fisher.
