Neaira first appears in Corinth around 390BC as one of the "daughters" of Nikarete, the madam of one of the classier whorehouses there. While in her prime (before the age of 20) she traveled with clients to Athens at least twice, and in her mid-twenties she was bought from Nikarete by two regular clients. Estimates seem to vary wildly, but the purchase price may have been the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Before long one of the men wanted to marry, and the other couldn't afford her by himself, so with the help of another patron, she bought her freedom and moved to Athens. It was said that her new patron had sex with her in public, which was frowned on even in ancient Greece, and that she passed out at a party and every man there, including slaves, had sex with her. Her next lover was Stephanos, who seemed to make a living suing or blackmailing people, apparently with Neaira's help.
